I am so bummed. I heard via email (and comic strip) that Mars was going to come so close to the Earth in August that it would look like another moon. When I heard this, the logical part of my brain said "Ummmmmm..... don't quote me on this but I think it would fuck with the gravitational pull on both planets in their orbits and it could be bad."

The child like part went "WHEEEEEE!!!! Our sky's gonna look like an alien planet!!!!!"

Without doing any research I informed two friends of mine and we started working on plans for a lakeside bonfire party to facilitate a viewing of this rare once in 2000-or-so-year phenomenon. So, to help these plans along I looked for a date. upon looking up this date, I stumbled onto the NASA site that explained the email hoax. Yes, Mars would come close to earth, and does this every two years. it is indeed visible to the naked eye, but as a large red star, not a "second moon".

I am bummed. I was really hoping for an awesome experience. but then again, if mars comes that close it would most likely suck for us.

But I'm still planning that lakeside bonfire party.
